Patient Success Story: Stephen’s Journey After Spinal Surgery

At just 9 months old, Stephen survived a traumatic burn injury that shaped his extraordinary strength and outlook on life.

Years later, severe back pain and declining mobility led to spinal surgery at UTSW Clements. He chose Acute Rehabilitation Hospital of Plano for the next step in his recovery journey.

A Goal Worth Working Toward

Stephen came to our hospital with one clear goal:

“To return home to Lubbock for the holidays.”

Making Progress Through Inpatient Rehabilitation

With one-on-one therapy, 24/7 nursing care, and physician-led rehabilitation, Stephen made significant progress throughout his inpatient stay.

Preparing for the Journey Home

At discharge, Stephen had regained independence with activities of daily living, was walking again with a walker, and could safely navigate stairs. He planned to continue his recovery through our outpatient rehabilitation program with the same therapy team that supported him during his inpatient stay.

Strength, Resilience, and Recovery

We are grateful to the UTSW care management team for coordinating Stephen’s transition to our hospital. It was an honor to support his recovery, but his determination, perseverance, and resilience made this achievement possible. His journey is a reminder that every milestone, big or small, brings patients one step closer to the life they want to return to. Our patients are the real heroes.
