Following an acute stroke, Mr. Hair was admitted to Acute Rehabilitation Hospital of Plano on April 14th with significant weakness and loss of independence. At admission, he required substantial assistance with bed mobility and dressing, maximum assistance from two people to transfer from bed to chair, and was unable to walk. He also had no active movement in his right arm.
A Challenging Beginning
For Mr. Hair, the fear was not only about recovery, but about whether life would ever feel like his own again. He shared that he did not want to return home if he could not care for himself and initially had little expectation that he would move his arm again.
Progress Through Intensive Inpatient Rehabilitation
Through intensive inpatient rehabilitation, one-on-one therapy, 24/7 nursing support, and physician-led care, Mr. Hair began making meaningful progress. At discharge from inpatient rehab, he was independent at the wheelchair level and able to walk with a quad cane with caregiver support for balance.
Continuing the Journey with Outpatient Therapy
But his journey did not end there.
Mr. Hair continued his recovery through our outpatient rehabilitation program with the same team that supported him during his inpatient stay. Today, he is walking independently with a quad cane and moving his right arm again. His progress has been powerful not only in what he can do, but in what those abilities mean to him.
“Acute Rehab allowed me to regain my life,” he shared. “I can put cream cheese on my bagel now.”
Kathy, one of our occupational therapists, described his right arm recovery as something truly rare in her 30 years of practice. For Mr. Hair, it was a moment he once thought may never happen.
“Initially, I had no expectation of being able to move my arm again and look at me now.”
Celebrating Every Milestone
Mr. Hair’s story is a reminder that rehabilitation is not just about walking farther or completing another therapy session. It is about restoring independence, rebuilding confidence, and helping patients return to the everyday moments that make life feel whole again.
Our team was honored to support his journey, but his determination, resilience, and strength made this progress possible. Stories like his remind us why we do what we do!
