Interview with Dr. Ivan “Dr. Fig” Figueroa

Dr. Ivan Figueroa, affectionately known as Dr. Fig, has been part of the Acute Rehabilitation Hospital of Plano team since 2023.

As a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician, Dr. Fig is passionate about helping patients regain function, independence, and confidence following illness or injury. His approach to medicine is grounded in a principle that is both simple and meaningful: treat every patient the way he would want to be treated.

We recently sat down with Dr. Fig to learn more about the physician behind the white coat, his approach to patient care, and why rehabilitation medicine is such a natural fit for him.

How would you describe your approach to patient care?

He tries to put himself in each patient’s situation and consider how he would want a physician or provider to communicate with him, support him, and make him feel during a difficult time. Building trust and helping patients feel comfortable is especially important to him because he believes that when patients feel safe and heard, they are able to give their best to the rehabilitation process, and he is able to give his best to them in return.

What is most important to you when caring for a patient?

Listening. Dr. Fig believes patients deserve to understand their care, ask questions, and have a meaningful voice in their recovery. He wants every patient and family to feel respected, supported, and confident that their concerns matter.

Why did you choose Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?

Teamwork was one of the reasons PM&R felt like the right specialty.

Growing up, Dr. Fig was always part of a team, and that same sense of collaboration continues to be important to him today. Rehabilitation brings physicians, nurses, therapists, case managers, patients, and families together toward shared goals. For Dr. Fig, team success is something he values deeply.

What do you enjoy most about rehabilitation medicine?

Seeing meaningful progress. Whether a patient is working toward walking again, becoming more independent with daily activities, or simply regaining confidence after a life-changing illness or injury, Dr. Fig values being part of that journey.

And who is Dr. Fig outside of the hospital?

A devoted husband, proud girl dad, traveler, baseball fan, and someone who appreciates good food and time with his family.

Since joining Acute Rehabilitation Hospital of Plano in 2023, Dr. Fig has become an important part of our Acute team. His kindness, collaborative spirit, and commitment to treating every patient with dignity and respect reflect what rehabilitation care is all about.

We are proud to have Dr. Ivan “Dr. Fig” Figueroa as part of our team.
